Making the Right Connections

A Q-and-A session on the how-to’s of installing
fiber-optic telecommunication into
redevelopment projects.

A challenge for any urban renovation project is finding a way to create a space that is both sustainable and meets the needs of today’s residents. All the appeal of living in a revitalized community is quickly lost if residents don’t have the amenities they need. One such feature that has grown to be a critical amenity is access to a fast, reliable broadband connection.

“It's our job to make sure they get broadband, because you just can't rent out apartments without it anymore,” said Henry Pye, the director of resident services and technology at JPI Partners LLC, which owns buildings across the country. "It might as well be water."

Considering the importance of resident broadband access, it would only make sense to use the fastest, most reliable form of telecommunications delivery, which most experts agree is Fiber to the Home (FTTH).

Such networks use glass fibers to send and receive information with light. Since light waves have thousands of wavelengths, as opposed to a single wavelength of signals like those found in cable networks, they can deliver virtually unlimited bandwidth. This performance advantage means that FTTH is capable of delivering all the speed and capacity residents will need for the foreseeable future.

However, the decision to add this kind of network to your existing property is not one to be made lightly. To help understand this process better, we decided to get the answers to some tough questions about fiber straight from the horse’s mouth. I recently sat down with Alan Williams, the executive vice-president of development engineering for Connexion Technologies, a fiber-optic amenity company based out of Cary, NC. to better understand the process.
