BBU
Battery Back-up Unit - a unit installed to maintain power for your home telephone that will maintain service for up to four hours when there is no electricity available.
Head End Building
This is the building where the services enter the neighborhood via satellite or fiber wiring and are then distributed through the fiber optic wiring in the community.
HOA
Home Owners Association - the association which manages your community. Selected services from Connexion are billed to you through the HOA.
MDFs
Main Distribution Frame. A wiring arrangement that brings the wires into a structure. This is typically main communications closet of a High Rise. These are usually located on the first floor of the building.
NOC
Network Operations Center - building where the network is monitored and problems can be detected early.
ONT
Optical Network Terminal - converts the information signals traveling through the fiber optic wires. These are located on the outside of the home.
PON
Passive Optical Network - A Fiber Optic Network without active electronics.
POTS
Plain Old Telephone Service.
Regional Operations Manager
Connexion employee that oversees field operations for a development from start to finish. They ensure that the installation of the fiber optic infrastructure and the set-up of services into the community runs smoothly.
Service Activation Specialist
Connexion employee that works exclusively with the new homeowners in Fiber to the Home community to help them get their services activated and also ensures the homeowner knows how to operate the equipment associated with their services.
SFU
Single Family Unit
T1
Voice channels, digitized and combined into a single digital stream. You can carry 23 phone lines on one T1 cable.
T3
3 times the bandwidth of T1.
FTTH
Fiber to the Home
Greenfield Communities
New community with no housing started.
Fiber Maintenance
A subcontractor Connexion Technologies employs to lay the fiber from the Head End to the home.
ILEC
Independent Local Exchange Carrier or Incumbent Local Exchange - Your established area telephone carrier.
CLEC
Competitive Local Exchange Carrier - these companies purchase lines from various sources and resell to the consumer. CLEC's do not typically sell to residents. Their predominate customer base is businesses.
Flower Pot
Flat can in the yard where fiber is split to the home.
IDF
Intermediate Distribution Facility - this is the communication closets on alternating floors going up a high rise. These contain fiber optic equipment to feed the floors below and above the closet with fiber.
NID
Network Interface Device - Physical point on the side of the house that connects the fiber optics to the end user (ie phone, data, voice).
Structured Wiring
Distributes voice, video and data services throughout the home in a "star" or "home-run" topology. The topology permits the signals to be easily redirected without costly rewiring.
Structured Wiring Box
Serves as the termination point of all RG6, QUAD-SHIELD (Coaxial), and CAT-5e (UTP) cabling in the residence. The SWB permits the cabling to be organized to maximize flexibility and convenience to the homeowner.
